Online Tutoring Support through LSS

Summer & Fall 2020

Learning Support Services (LSS) will continue supporting courses through Summer Session and Fall Quarter via Zoom. The tutors are undergraduate students who have previously taken this course and done well in it. Students can receive tutoring support in this course with the services listed below.

What To Expect in a Zoom Tutoring/MSI Session?

  • Being on time helps the Tutor take attendance and address technological issues at the start of the session.

  • The Tutor may invite you to use Zoom features, such as breakout rooms, screen-sharing, virtual raising hands, and the Zoom Whiteboard. Be sure to check out Zoom tutorials and resources so that you are ready to interact with your peers!

  • You may need to practice empathy with your peers and your Tutor. Please be respectful and patient as people learn how to effectively use video conferencing and online services.

  • All Sessions are Accessible through our Sign-Up Platform, Tutor Trac. Sign-ups go live Friday June 19th & Tutoring begins officially starting Monday, June 22nd after each courses' first lecture.

What services are provided during summer?

  • SMALL GROUP TUTORING:

Small Group Tutoring sessions during summer are limited to 10 students. Read below for more information about our Small Group Tutoring program. All sign-ups are accessible through Tutor Trac.

  • WRITING TUTORING:

One-on-one appointments will be available on Tutor Trac during summer. Please read below for more information about our writing tutoring services, namely individual appointments. All sign-ups are accessible through Tutor Trac.

  • DROP-IN MATH:

Drop-In Math support consists of 20 minute sessions with a Math tutor that can help support students enrolled in these courses: MATH 2, 3, 11A/B, 19A/B, 21, 23A, 100. Drop-in can be accessed through Zoom - All sign-ups are accessible through Tutor Trac.

To Sign up:

  • Sign in to the Tutor Trac system. Access instructions Here on our Tutor Trac Page.

  • Sign up for a session as soon as Tutor Trac opens (Friday 19th). Sessions fill up quickly, so sign up early to secure yourself a spot! For Summer, sessions will be set to repeat for the entire Summer Session. Students to not need to sign themselves up for each week’s session(s).

  • Come prepared to your tutoring session and be ready to participate with other students in your group.

Availability Requests:

Students can request that their tutor post more/different availability. This form will prompt our office to potentially reach out to your tutor and ask them to consider holding sessions at a different time or to hold an additional weekly session - considering there are multiple requests for one tutor/course. If a course is not on the list of supported classes for Summer 2020, LSS will not be able to support your course or add additional session times.

Drop Policy:

Tutoring is a valuable resource that many students use throughout their time at UCSC. To make sure all students have access to tutoring, Learning Support Services normally has a student drop policy. However, because of the unique circumstances that 2020 has brought us, we will not be strictly enforcing this policy as we learn remotely.



    • NOTE: MSI sessions are not offered during Summer Session - only Small Group Tutoring, Writing Support, and Math Drop-In Support. MSI will resume Quarterly for Fall 2020.

    • Schedule Posted: On Tutor Trac

    • Attendance: You do not need to sign-up ahead of time and can join the Zoom link listed in TutorTrac at the scheduled start time.

      • If you want to add an MSI session to your schedule ahead of time, you can sign-up more than 24 hours in advance of the session and then join the Zoom link listed in Tutor Trac at the scheduled start time.

    • Quarter Commitment: Students tend to get the most benefit from the MSI sessions if they attend weekly or at least 6 times during the quarter. However, you can attend an MSI session without committing to any additional MSI sessions.

    • What to Expect From Remote MSI this Quarter: At the start of the session, your tutor will take attendance and address any technological issues. During the session, the tutor may invite you to use Zoom features, such as breakout rooms, screen-sharing, virtual raising hands, and the Zoom Whiteboard. Be sure to check out Zoom tutorials and resources so that you are ready to interact with your peers! Please be respectful and patient as people learn how to effectively use video conferencing and online services.

    • Schedule Posted: On Tutor Trac

    • Attendance: You must sign-up more than 24 hours in advance of the session and then join the Zoom link listed in Tutor Trac at the scheduled time. Sessions are capped at 6 students normally, but for summer session, they are capped at 10 students.

    • Quarter Commitment: You must commit to attending the SGT session weekly for the remainder of the quarter when you sign-up for an SGT session.

    • What to Expect From Remote SGT this Quarter: At the start of the session, your tutor will take attendance and address any technological issues. During the session, the tutor may invite you to use Zoom features, such as breakout rooms, screen-sharing, virtual raising hands, and the Zoom Whiteboard. Be sure to check out Zoom tutorials and resources so that you are ready to interact with your peers! Please be respectful and patient as people learn how to effectively use video conferencing and online services.

    • Schedule Posted: On Tutor Trac. Note: Drop-in hours are for specific courses in these disciplines. Review the LSS Drop-In Support page for more information. For Summer Drop-In Support, Visit the Summer Support Page.

    • Attendance: You do not need to schedule an appointment. Students will be seen in the order they join drop-in hours via Zoom. Students work up to 20 minutes individually with the drop-in tutor.

    • Quarter Commitment: Students can attend a drop-in session without committing to any additional drop-in sessions.

    • What to Expect From Remote Drop-In Support this Quarter: Upon arrival to the drop-in hours via Zoom, students will be placed into a waiting room. Students will wait until a drop-in tutor is available to work with them. Please be respectful and patient as people learn how to effectively use video conferencing and online services.

    • Availability Posted: On Tutor Trac where you can choose from a variety of times, days, and locations that best fits your schedule.

    • Attendance: You must sign-up more than 24 hours in advance by booking an appointment during a tutor's availability listing. You then join the Zoom link at the scheduled session start time.

    • Quarter Commitment: You can schedule a writing appointment without committing to any additional writing appointments, but you can also book recurring weekly appointments.

    • What to Expect From Remote Writing Support this Quarter: At the start of your appointment, your tutor will mark your attendance and address any technological issues. During the session, the tutor may invite you to use Zoom features, such screen-sharing and the Zoom Whiteboard. Be sure to check out Zoom tutorials and resources so that you are ready to interact with your tutor!

    • NOTE: Drop-In Writing Support will not be available during Summer 2020; however, Individual 1-Hour Appointments will be available all Summer.

    • Schedule Posted: On Tutor Trac

    • Attendance: You do not need to schedule an appointment. Students will be seen in the order they join drop-in hours via Zoom. Students work up to 30 minutes individually with the drop-in tutor.

    • Quarter Commitment: You can attend a drop-in session without committing to any additional drop-in sessions.

    • What to Expect From Remote Drop-In Writing Support this Quarter: Upon arrival to the drop-in hours via Zoom, students will be placed into a waiting room. Students will wait until a drop-in tutor is available to work with them. Please be respectful and patient as people learn how to effectively use video conferencing and online services.

    • Schedule Posted: The schedule is not posted publicly. Instead, students contact the LSS office to submit requests. Our office reviews requests and pairs up students with tutors who then communicate directly with each other to schedule the individual tutoring sessions. Once a day/time has been set, LSS will add this tutoring session to students personal Tutor Trac schedule.

    • Attendance: If you are affiliated with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) and your DRC coordinator has approved accommodations for tutoring, carefully review our office accommodations page that includes more information about how to submit a request for accommodations for LSS services.

    • Quarter Commitment: Students commit to attending the individual tutoring accommodation weekly for the remainder of the quarter.

    • What to Expect From Remote Individual Tutoring this Quarter: At the start your appointment, your tutor will mark your attendance and address any technological issues. During the session, the tutor may invite you to use Zoom features, such screen-sharing and the Zoom Whiteboard.
